Andreas Wagner joined the Department of Biochemistry in 2006 as a Full Professor.
His research revolves around the molecular evolution of genes, genomes, and genetic networks. He has a particular interest in the robustness of complex genetic systems and their evolvability, the extent to which they can produce evolutionary innovations. His research spans a wide range of organisms ranging from bacteria to humans.
Andreas Wagner studied molecular genetics at the University of Vienna. He received his M. phil and PhD at the Department of Biology at Yale University. He conducted postdoctoral research at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, where he became a member of the external faculty in 1999. As an Assistant Professor, he lead a research group at the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico, where he received tenure in 2002.
